At the entrance to the Danube Bend, embraced by the Pilis and the Visegrád mountains, finds itself Hungary’s first capital, the cradle of the Hungarian state and church, Esztergom. The most important monuments of the town founded in 973 are on the Castle Hill: the 100 m tall cathedral (the Basilica) and the royal castle. The museums and exhibitions in these buildings tell the story of several moments in the Hungarian history and Roman-Catholic Church.
One needs several days to see everything in Esztergom: architecture, museums, bathes, alleys, shops; among the most important sights to be seen are the Water Town (Víziváros), the Royal Town (Királyváros or “belváros”) or Town Centre, the Saint Thomas Becket Hill, the Primate’s Island and the Maria Valeria Bridge, the Búbánat valley. Esztergom is also well known for the water sports, fishing possibilities, bicycle, car or walking tours and the possibility of crossing the border, as well as the natural and built heritage and the the surrounding small localities.
